Unfortunately, most educational institutions in Nigeria were not prepared for the introduction of remote learning; as teachers were not trained, and systems were not put in place for such. Many schools that could not afford online learning used alternatives like, sending worksheets via email and WhatsApp. Oakbridge Foundation like these schools equally made efforts to deliver some form of teaching and learning through the use of worksheets weekly. However, the need to do more was evident, as the lockdown on schools is yet to be lifted, and so we decided to make learning more interactive for our pupils through digital means (pre-recorded lessons loaded on tablet devices for children to learn offline in their homes), in addition to the worksheets. This is so we can continue to provide our pupils with opportunities to be technologically and digitally inclined, to make learning more interesting and improve learning outcomes, thereby reducing the impact of the long stay away from school due to the pandemic. In the past two months, since our digital learning project started, we have seen its impact on our pupils in that it gives them a sense of inclusion and fulfilment. Our pupils are enthusiastic about their learning sessions and in the words of one of them, “I am more brilliant than I would have been if I was staying at home and not learning”. Also, their performance during assessments has proven that they are learning productively. Based on this background, we have designed a plan to scale up this intervention to other members of the community and other communities in the Federal Capital Territory.Project GoalTo provide sustainable platforms for continuous and improved learning that inspires creativity among children from indigent communities, through digital learning resources for children across Nigeria till school resumes.
